His books are still used today as reference for book collectors and dealers as well as a pleasureable and informative reading experience. This play is a very imaginative one That features a host of characters that actually existed in Samuel Johnson's circle. Samuel Johnson is best known as an English Lexicographer, essayist, poet and moralist. He was the major literary figure in the second half of the 18th century. His monumental Dictionary of the English Language secured his reputation as a scholar. James Boswell's epic biography of Johnson is a true classic of English literature. Boswell is a character in this play. This volume is in Very good condition with some very light fading to the top of the boards. The Frontispiece is a tissue guarded portrait of Dr. Johnson by Sir Joshua Reynolds. There is a small chip to the extreme bottom of the title page. Also, a small bookplate attached to front pastedown. Right after the title page there is a beautiful reproduction of the Playbill for the first performance of the play. It is in bright red as well as black ink. Also, there are plates within that depict some of the characters and contemporaries in Samuel Johnson's life. There are pages that are uncut within this volume and that may indicate that it has not actually been read before.
