An Antarctic Diary

By: Passel, Charles

Price: $625.00

Quantity: 1 available

This is a magnificent and extremely rare volume. Geologist Charles F. Passel served on the famous 1939-1941 Antarctic expedition under the command of Admiral Byrd. These are his diaries from that expedition and this offering was published in 1992. Previous editions of the diary had been edited and expurgated. In this edition Mr. Passel insisted on the diary being published exactly as it was written, with misspellings and other anomalies intact. The author said that he wanted these pages exactly as he wrote them with his frozen fingers in the Antarctic. No editing was to be done. This copy is one of only forty copies published that were signed by the author. It is presented in the publisher's beautiful clamshell presentation box and the book is quarter-bound in pigskin over marbled boards. This volume is flawless. The binding and the case remind one of the chilly Antarctic landscape and in fact the binder actually read the book to draw inspiration for her design. The reading is wonderful.I was at a Bookshow some time ago and was lucky enough to speak with the publisher regarding the book. I bought all of his available copies as I had sold the two copies that I had previously owned. This is the last copy. For those of you who are fascinated with Antarctic exploration, it doesn't get much better than this and there are truly very few copies available. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
